Description
What Did Joseph Smith Secretly Teach His Closest Followers?
Scholars estimate that we have fewer than half of Joseph Smith’s sermons recorded. Why were most of his teachings never published? and where do we find them? While teachings recorded in personal journals and memoirs have peppered hundreds of articles and books, The Forgotten Teachings is the first compilation of Joseph’s teachings contained in those and similar resources. Moreover, it presents dozens of accounts recording Joseph saying he wanted to teach the saints more — they just weren’t ready in 1844. So, Joseph taught his closest followers secret doctrines that he instructed them to record in their journals because one day, saints would seek them out for doctrine. The Forgotten Teachings presents nearly one thousand pages of those teachings.
More Complete Teachings of Joseph
None of The Forgotten Teachings were used as sources for the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith and no, you cannot find them all in Words of Joseph Smith or the Joseph Smith Papers project. These, and many dozens of other sources were tapped to find Joseph’s teachings and there remains about a thousand pages of material to be gleaned from other, more formal sources. Those will be in future volumes.
Presented by Drew Briney, who has been lauded in reader reviews as “the icon of thoroughness” and “one of the greatest LDS scholars of our day,” The Forgotten Teachings neither censors nor excuses any of Joseph’s accounts. It simply presents Joseph’s teachings so readers can have a single resource that allows a fuller glimpse into his vast understanding of the plan of salvation.
